Meet MSHF Scholarship Recipient Kailey Carlson
Kailey is working toward an MD at Yale School of Medicine. She says she was drawn to the program because, “The environment at Yale is very inclusive, and they have opportunities to pursue essentially anything you may be interested in.” Kailey is hoping to work in rural primary care once she graduates as she wants to help reduce the disparity in primary care in those areas.
Her advice for studying is, “Much of medicine is memorization-based, rather than conceptual. With this kind of content, spaced repetition (like Anki) is the most efficient way to learn – I can’t recommend it enough!” Outside of school, Kailey enjoys hiking (though she says the mountains of the East coast are nothing like those of the Mat-Su), knitting, maintaining many houseplants and spending time with her dog, Bear.
Kailey says, “The MSHF scholarship has helped me feel financially secure, so I can dedicate more of my attention to doing well in school. It also means I can graduate without debt, so I don’t have to choose my specialty based on income potential. It makes a huge difference, and I definitely recommend applying!”
